Preposition, position of preposition, type of Preposition and Use of Preposition:-

 Preposition:- A preposition is a word which is placed before a noun or pronoun to show the relation of that noun or pronoun with some other words ( noun/pronoun/adjective/adverb) in a sentence.

       Preposition establishes a relation of a noun or pronoun with some other.......

         1) Noun or pronoun

         2) Adjective

         3) Adverb

    -: Position of Preposition:-

1) Preposition is used before a noun or pronoun

2) After Preposition, Objective Case is used.

3) After Preposition Gerund is used.

4). A preposition can be used anywhere in a sentence, at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end.

                   -: Types of Preposition :-

There are three main types of Preposition:

They are.....

(1) Preposition of Time

(2) Preposition of Place

(3) Preposition of Movement / Direction

(1) Preposition of Time :-

A preposition which shows the various aspects of time is called a preposition of time.

List of Preposition of Time :

( At, on, in, after, later, ago, before, by, until, during, while, from, to, till, past, for, since, as soon as, & as long as.)

(2) Preposition of Place:-


          -: Use of Preposition of Time :-

(i) Use of 'at'

'At' is used to denote a specific time, location, position and activities.

# At : Denoting point of time

Ex. * I got up at 5 AM this morning.( a point of time)

* I will meet you at 8 PM.( Time - when will I meet you?)

* The appointment is at 8:30 PM.( Time - when is the appointment?


# At : Denoting place

* Nagma is waiting at home.( Location - where is Nagma waiting?)

* She was sitting at her desk. 

* How many people are working at the school?/ at Microsoft?

* Salma is at the library.

* The fisherman waited near his nets at the side of the quay.( Position as a point)

* I can not meet you at four. I will be at the hairdresser's until five. ( Public places)


# At : Denoting an address

* I lived at Purnea.

# At : Denoting activities

'At' is used to refer to activities which involve a group of people.

* I didn't know anyone at the party.

* There was a demonstration at the opening of the exhibition.

***' At' is used to talk about things that we do well or badly.( Adjective + at ) 

* He was never very good at sports.

* I was always brilliant at drawing.

* He was terrible at keeping his account in order.

# At : Denoting Directions

At is used after a verb to talk about directing something towards another person or thing.(Smile at, shout at, wave at, throw at)

* He was waving at the crowd.

* She threw the ball at the wall.

* She smiled at him.

He shouted at Ram.

'At' is used to denote a person's age.

* He died at the age of 90.
